| The
Battle of Chateau Thierry took place over the period
from 31 May to 22 July 1918 when the Germans' final
offensive reached the River Marne and it is sometimes
referred to as part of the Second Battle of the Marne.
There the US 3rd Division distinguished itself despite
headlines back home giving credit to the Marines.
In repelling the river crossing of the German 7th
Army the US 38th Infantry earned the title, 'The Rock
of the Marne'. The Germans' offensive failed and by
6 August they were back on the River Vesle. Every
year Memorial Day commemoration ceremonies take place
at the nearby (Belleau Wood) Aisne-Marne American
cemetery.
The
visit to Chateau Thierry is made during the tour that
also covers the actions at the River Ourcq and Belleau
Wood including the site of the Quentin Roosevelt Memorial
and the impressive Landowski's Fantomes National Memorial. |
